Water and Catchment Planning: Incorporating Demography and Population?

leonardo.carroll@anu.edu.au

This postgraduate project will investigate how demographic and population issues can be incorporated into water resource planning, in a selection of case study areas.  The project will:

  1. assess the institutional framework for, and interactions between, key stakeholders including natural resource managers, land use planners, and research organisations;
  2. seek to understand and document existing and potential methods for use of demographic data, by natural resource managers and land use planners; and
  3. identify mechanisms through which natural resource managers and land use planners can most effectively use demographic data and factor population change into their planning processes.

The project will include background assessment of environmental variables affecting water availability, demographic variables affecting water usage, and current and/or proposed planning instruments which affect the case study areas and other jurisdictions.
