State of the art and future development of erosion modelling in Italy and Europe

Dr Lorenzo Borselli
Research Institute for Geo-Hydrogeological Protection CNR-IRPI, Sesto Fiorentino, Florence, Italy

Abstract:

Lorenzo Borselli is a senior scientist of the Italian National Research Counsel. He has twenty years of experience in the field on land degradation and hydro-geological risk assessment. In his talk, he will briefly present some of the current land degradation issues affecting the Italian landscapes (particularly in Tuscany), whose origins reside in both geo-hydrological conditions and land management (i.e. badlands, landslides, tillage erosion, and land levelling). He will then outline the main modelling approaches pursued in Italy to assess land degradation and water erosion, from broad-empirical ones to more process-based, in particular Eurosem. He will conclude with sharing his personal views of future developments for erosion modelling in Italy and Europe.

Bio:

Photo of Dr Borselli in the fieldDr Borselli is a geologist and researcher of the Italian Research Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection (CNR-IRPI). He is current member on COST 634 “On and Off-site Environmental Impact of Runoff and Erosion”. He collaborates to several international research projects related to soil erosion process and modeling, soil conservation, desertification process and measures for mitigation. Author of more than 60 scientific publications, he is the Italian responsible of the international project DESIRE “Desertification Mitigation and Remediation of Land - a global approach for local solutions”.

His current research interests are: process-understanding and modeling of soil erosion by water, soil erosion by tillage and land leveling, surface hydrology and flow connectivity, soil mechanics and shallow landslide, debris flow hazard in active volcanic areas, statistical and mathematical advanced techniques applied to soil erosion and surface hydrology.

The Fenner School Seminar Series is held in the Forestry Lecture Theatre, Forestry Building 48, Linnaeus Way (comes off Daley Road), ANU (Acton) campus, ACT
